I went to a hair salon today in my neighborhood and the hairstylists looked at me like I was crazy for being there. My hair was not as great as I wanted it to be. My hair looked dull and dry, but the cut is great. They did not have any beauty products that were needed to do African-Americans hair. The beautician even admitted to only knowing how to do Whites. She said she was unexperienced with doing African-Americans hair. I had to go home and put some oil, hairspray, and curl it to give it shine and spunk. Why do these salons not have the required materials for all types of hair? This have happened to me twice. I do not want to go way over in the inner city to get my hair done. Its ridiculous.

Well.. maybe that area in town has a majority of white ppl..its not really as negative but maybe they're just ignorant to the fact that other ethnicities may want some hair care! Lol. Try going to an ethnic salon that can cater to your needs, if not go back to the salon and bring samples of some products you use.. instead of using their products bring a couple of yours that have some instructions, if you're hair is dull after cutting; bring some non-oil sheen spray.

This is another great example of common ignorance...one. does this make sense? if she's living in an area that caters to whites what is the likely hood she cant afford to go to the salon? two. how can you say how many african americans are willing to dish out "2 to 3 digits"! We have very kinky tight curls, our hair care is probably one of the most fustrating. Uneducated and ignorant people shouldn't be making comments...in the least, saying that we dont go to the salon once a week. Some of us aren't just statistics, we have well-balanced lives and yes we can afford the salon, what you see on TV about helping blacks and our poverty is very true, but it doesn't apply to everyone...

I would say maybe because in the neighborhood there is more whites then African Americans.
Since there there aren't a lot of African Americans that come in there, they deal with caucasian peoples hair better because of the experience they have.

There are whites with curly hair, and I'm sure they feel the same way. Everyone wants to blow dry their hair straight. However, there should be some salons that have high quality products to deal with any type of hair. If you've only gone to a few salons, you may not be looking hard enough (depending on your region, I guess). Search the internet, look at salon's sites and possible reviews.
I'm assuming that the hair/beauty industry is diverse enough that there have been a very good amount of people trained to do all types/textures of hair. Keep looking.

Steph has it right. It isn't that they are trying to be rude (at least in most cases), just that they are catering to their normal clientele. Hair care products are expensive, and since african-american hair takes specialized products most salons aren't going to buy stuff they will never use.
A friend of mine had the same problem. She found a salon that was willing to take care of her hair if she brought in her own products. Maybe you could try that? She just grabbed a phone book and found one in a few calls.

If most of your customers were white, or asian, or any other race for that matter, you cater to them. There is no use to waste space on products and services for a customer that you almost never have. If there was a market for salon services catered to african americans in your nieghborhood someone would have opened one. Call around and see if anyone in your area can help.
