Preventing hair breakage?

I'm an african american female who keeps her hair natural. I'm trying to grow it out. My mother says the key things are to prevent breakage and to keep my hair moistureized. Are there any products anyone could recommend for moisture? Are there any low maintence styles I should try? What should I do to prevent breakage?

Preventing hair breakage?

Black hair tends to be dryer and more brittle than most hair types and this causes it to break easier when combing and styling. Hair vitamins give hair the minerals, aminos and vitamins needed to grow stronger and longer

Prepare your hair for your hair style by giving your hair what it needs to be stronger and healthier for the hair style that you chose! Vitamins, minerals and aminos are all natural along with deep penetrating moisture is how you can beat the breakage. I suggest hair vitamins, emu oil and follicle stimulator for hair breakage problems!

Thickening the skin of the scalp is extremely important for hair thinning as we age. Emu oil keeps the scalp skin thick and healthy while adding tremendous amounts of moisture

Go to Sally Beauty Supplies to get hair products for your condition. They have plenty, just ask for assistance.

To keep your hair healty and avoid breakage:

Eliminate or cut back on smoking, caffeine and carbonated sodas which weaken the body and block maximum hair growing potential.

Eat a healthy diet. Avoid foods that are high in sugar or fat.

Treat your hair like a piece of fine old lace. Treat it carefully avoiding any unnecessary brushing, combing or handling.

Avoid use of hot water, hot blow dryers or other hair care tools that may stress the hair.

Have a weekly scalp massage to provide stimulation to the hair follicles.

Do a series of ongoing hot oil treatments to protect the hair's shaft.

Have regular trims to eliminate split ends and allow the hair to look and feel healthier.

Get plenty of rest and sleep to allow your body to grow hair

you should try a protective spray

My African American friend uses VO-5 cream. It gives you a nice shine too. It worked well on my bleached blonde hair too. Good luck.

Do a deep conditioning every week after you wash your hair.

I usually buy deep conditioner mask at Walmart. When my hair is still wet I lather my hair with the conditioner and wrap the entire head with kitchen foil wrap. Leave it on for an hour and rinse with cold water. You won't believe what this does over time. I have no split ends and silky soft hair.

I am half black, and my hair is very kinky, and coarse naturally.

I'm african american too and I use Dr. Miracle's products on my hair. It has worked very well and keeps my hair moisturized but not to oily/greasy.
