Why does My Hair Always Smell?

I am an African American but for some reason my hair gets oily so fast. Even If I don't use product it gets so smell. Like it's not my actually hair.. it's my scalp. I have tried washing it and everything else, and it smells fine until like a day or two and then I can smell it. So I now if other people can smell the scent, then i can. How can I prevent this? I wash my hair like every 3 days and I cannot wash more than that or it will be really dry, yet the scalp is still oily. What can I do???

Btw. I am wearing my hair relaxed at the moment, but my natural texture is wavy. Even when I did not have chemical in it and it was wavy, I still always had a smelly scalp.

If this happens the only solution is to wash and shower your hair everyday.

wash your hair

Well the amount of times a person washes their hair depends on their scalp, theres nothing you can do to change how much your hair produces sebum (oil)

I would recommend since your hair is probably dry from the relaxer that you buy a shampoo that deals with dry hair (redken smooth down or all soft) and wash your hair at least every second day.

ok, I am not African American, but here's my advice anyway. I would say right off the bat that you need to wash your hair more often. I personally wash mine daily, but I know a lot of people simply do not want to or cannot. If your shampoo is not getting you through to the next washing, then you need a different shampoo. Talk to your stylist about it and see what they recommend. You need a shampoo and conditioner system that will clean your hair and scalp well and not dry out your hair.

Personally I cannot go one day without washing my hair or it gets pretty yukky too. And no, my hair is not falling out or breaking off because of over washing, I use a good quality moisturizing shampoo and I condition well, making sure to not get the conditioner on my scalp.

really, talk to your stylist.

or you can experiment with different shampoos until you find one that works best for you.

I have to continually change my shampoos out too, because it seems the change keeps my hair looking it's best.

Have you tried just washing your scalp?

You pull your hair back in a pony tail so the length doesn't get wet. You either put your scalp under the facet or turn on the shower head and bend forward into the water so it only hits the top pf your head and doesn't run down into the length. Massage the shampoo into the hair from your ears up, then lean forward and rinse it out.

I am not African American, but I have super thick, long hair and I hate washing it every day when only my scalp is oily.

Wash it everyday.

Try washing your hair more often. If you can't, then when you shower wash for longer and uses plenty of conditioner.

To avoid oil try wrapping your hair in a cotton t-shirt you don't want any more while you sleep, it will absorb some of the oil. Try using leave in conditioners that smell good each morning or de-tangle sprays that smell fruity each morning to keep your hair smelling good!

Good luck!

I am African American as well and I wash every three days as well. I use Apple Cider Vinegar. It can be purchased at any grocery store. I fill a spray bottle 3/4 of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 water. I part my hair in four sections and I spray directly on my scalp until my whole scalp is covered. then I put on a plastic cap. After about 15 minutes I get in the shower and and shampoo and condition like normal. Please look up Apple Cider Vinegar online and you will find it has many benefits. I also have added it to my face care regimen and my acne is clearing up faster as well.
