A question for African American women...?

Do you think it is wise to get braids for the very young girls? I saw some little girls yesterday, they looked about 5, and already had artificial hair. I thought their mother was sending the message to them at such a young age that their natural hair was not good enough. I think braids should be something black women choose when they are older, not grow up with as normal. I tried out braids once, but my hair all ripped out (the girl who braided it said my hair was too thin for those styles) and the process was painful and the fake hair was heavy and hard to wash. I think maybe little girls would not want them anyway. Why is it considered bad for black women and girls to wear their hair naturally? What do you think?

I think braids on a child should be done as long as it's age appropriate. I have 4 girls their ages are 11,9,7 and 1. I braid all of their hair. My 11 year old has had braids with and without fake hair. her self confidence is fine she could care less of what people think. my 1 year old does not wear extensions of course I braid her hair with beads and pretty little bows. i feel as an African American parent that Natural hair is perfectly fine, but since our hair texture is completely different than women of other cultures, we have do things to keep our hair neat and manageable. If I don't braid my daughters' hair it will become matted and it will break off. I am a firm believer in work with what god gave you, but their is nothing wrong with seeing a hair do and wanting to try it out. It becomes wrong when the child feels they need weave to look nice.

Its freedom of Choice..!!!

i don't like braids i like my natural hair

I think it is a shame also. But women do this self hate to themselves. I can understand a five year old having braid but don't add weave to their hair. Just like don't perm their hair.

A question for African American women...?

I personally have been seeing a lot of little girls with braids and quick weaves and I totally disagree with it. Let the little girls be little girls! What's wrong with the pony tails and bows that we grew up with. Be natural!

A question for African American women...?

I feel black women are out of that stereotype now we can wear our hair any way we please, and as far as children and braids go look to Africa and the children there...

A question for African American women...?

yea cause if they dont have good hair the braids will make there hair look nice

A question for African American women...?

You got a point in your question.

Kids shouldn't be made to wear fake hair at that age.

have you listened to India Arie's "I'm not my hair"?

A question for African American women...?

well i'm african american women, and if i had a daughter i would let her know being natural is beautiful.that she doesn't have to wear fake hair or nails or change her eye color to be beautiful.

its a society and misrepresentation of culture.. they themselves probably had so much weave they couldn't hold their heads up.. but that is just the way it is... I believe that black people, especially children and women need to go back to there own in the sense of being natural woman who they are. But you see society has formed an image of the black woman and it is a sad image... what is even sadder is the fact that these young girls have young mothers that don't know any difference themselves. They don't know the difference between right and wrong so how can they teach their children.. just like a mother who is a prostitute and whore cannot expect to raise a female child that will be proud and respected, cuase the only image that she has of women.. is the image that their mothers provide!

A question for African American women...?

My lil sis gets her hari braided once a year, for the summer. I used to get them when I was younger also. This way my mom wouldn't have to bother with our hair as much (it's a hassle) It wasn't becuase we had bad hair, or becuase it was too short, or anything...it was becuase it was easier to just wake up in the morning and save 30-50 min doing our hair in the morning. But there's nothing wrong with natural hair...it's just hard to maintain all the time. I personally don't like weave and refuse to wear it becuase I think its a little tacky.

Little girls should stay little girls. Cornrows w/ real hair, plaits and pig tails are great. Moms dont know the damage they are doing to their children. I would advise not putting fake hair in a little girls hair. It is a waste of money anyway. Moms should stop being lazy and do their child's hair. Some moms claim they add hair to the little the child has, but thier little folicles can take all that added stress and the child ends up bald headed some more.

it's all about choice. I wear mine in a relaxer/ human tracks because I want more versatility. If I go back natural I would have to cut a ll my hair off and start over.

we do it to make our hair look good what wrong with that? it also makes your hair longer its not because we hate ourself we just like it so whats wrong with looking alittle cute once in a while?
