African American Dry Skin?

My boyfriend's daughter recently came to stay with us, she's 9. The purpose of this is not to bash her mother, but the little girl was in fact neglected. Her hair had been so fried by a relaxer we had to cut a lot of it off and her skin is constantly dry. I've tried every kind of lotion I can think of, creamy baby oil has helped more than anything so far. But even after I slather her in it, a few hours later she's dry. Her hair is the same way, it soaks up grease like in minutes. Any suggestions?

what ever you do DON'T USE BABY OIL! using petroleum products actually make the skin worse. at first, yes, it appears to help, but in reality, all commercial products are created in a way to keep the skin dry %26amp; create more dry skin problems (even though they say they're created to help very dry skin %26amp; moisturize %26amp; blah blah blah). the fact is that these products contain CHEMICALS! one of them being PETROLEUM. would you put gasoline on your skin? i didn't think so.

i would strongly suggest using all natural products, on her %26amp; on yourself. skin, hair, face ... everything. using products that don't contain harsh chemicals will help greatly. if you feel she needs oil, the only oils safe for use on the face is almond oil, as it won't clog pores (you don't want her developing worse skin problems as she gets older, so it's better to use things that will help her skin while she's young). also, for her hair %26amp; body, you can use the almond oil, as well as organic virgin unrefined coconut oil.

this is what i do, and i love the results of my hair, skin %26amp; face, and i have very dry skin (w/ psoriasis) and acne, besides my face's skin is hypersensitive.

i love that you want to help your boyfriend's daughter. please use these suggestions %26amp; see if you don't see an improvement.

my favorite face, hair %26amp; body products, other than the oils i mentioned is Burt's Bees!

You are doing what is right for that little angel. God Bless YOU. Tyra Banks swears by using Vaseline Petroleum Jelly for her skin all over. She says this keeps wrinkles away as well. Hope this helps. As far as her hair, try soaking it in olive oil for about 30 minutes and this will soften it......

Keep trying.

Try Cornhuskers Lotion, don't put it on her face. Cocoa Butter is also really good. Mayonnaise is really good for dry hair, so is olive oil and it's much more pleasant. I would look for products specifically for African American hair. Try taking her to a salon that specializes in fixing hair. I agree with the person who said to use all natural ingredients but make sure that she's not allergic to the products. I can't use any of the all natural stuff, it makes me break out in a rash.

i am not a big fan of petroleum jelly because it has horrible chemicals in it. try going the organic route...use safflower oil (not expensive) or grapeseed oil (a little more expensive). they work great and you can also use in hair. if you want good smelling oil, just add 5-10 drops of any essential oil, perferably something that smells pleasant. keep in mind that when you smell essential oils, they are in extremely concentrated so they will be strong.

also, for hair, you can put a generous amount of mayonnaise and wrap the head for about an hour or even over night!

good luck!

perhaps she needs to start taking an oil supplement like flax or fish oil. tell her to cut down on bathing and washing her hair as much as possible. (like cut showers to every other day) as for her hair, you will need to take her to a stylist that deals with course hair. they can probably reccomend an appropriate product and instruct you how to apply it.

First, make sure she is drinking plenty of water. You might want to have her see a pediatrician to find out if she has eczema(severely dry skin), which can be helped by installing a water softener. Lastly, my twin boys had a constant dry patch on their legs so i stopped using baby lotion and used AVEENO lotion. a bit more pricey than most lotions, but i LOVE it. They sell it @ Costco cheaper than anywhere else. Good luck!

It really doesn't sound like she was neglected. It sounds more like the mom was overprotecting or over caring for her which caused her hair and skin to suffer damage. It does happen. Please go to a health food store or Asian market and pick up some coconut oil. Add a little to her diet by using it in your cooking. Use it in her hair and skin. Following her bath, put a thin layer on her skin. It will be quickly absorbed into her skin. When this happens, apply another layer. Keep repeating this until her skin is saturated with it without feeling greasy. you will deffinitely notice a difference. Coconut oil and coconut products are mankind's fountain of youth.
